Seasonal transitions can really be taxing because when one season goes away, it means we change and rearrange our entire living space, especially if our clothes are everywhere. In the spring, we call this spring cleaning, and when summer goes away, we mourn the loss of lighter garments as we tearfully bring out thicker shirts and longer pants. Since summer clothing is a lot different from winter clothing, whether we’re talking about lighter colors or clothes that wrinkle more due to a high percentage of natural materials, you’re not alone in facing challenges in storing summer clothing and footwear. Here are some tips that will help you do this efficiently and easily.
Clear out the closet and get rid of what you don’t wear
The first step in efficient storage of summer clothing and footwear is sorting and getting rid of excess. Go through each piece of clothing and decide what to keep, what to donate, and what to throw away. Try to do this using a three-month rule. If you have several dresses hanging in your closet all summer but you haven’t worn them once, it’s time for them to find a new owner.
Preparation and cleaning
Before storing your summer clothes and shoes, make sure to prepare them for storage. This means washing all garments and thoroughly cleaning the footwear. This ensures your clothes and shoes are ready for the next season and, perhaps most importantly, thorough washing prevents the accumulation of unpleasant odors in the closet or storage bags. Since we sweat more in summer clothing, this step is extremely important.
Use vacuum bags
One of the most efficient ways to save space is vacuum bags. They allow for compression of clothing, which takes up much less space. This is particularly useful if you have limited storage space. Simply place the clothes that will stay with you next summer in the bags and use a vacuum cleaner to suck out the air. This way, your clothes will remain protected from external factors, moisture, and odors that they could pick up in storage spaces or closets. Next summer, when you open the bag, you’ll struggle a bit with ironing, but the clothes will be fresh, fragrant, and ready to wear.
Proper tootwear storage
Footwear can be especially problematic when it comes to storage. If you’ve kept them, we recommend using the original shoe boxes or investing in clear boxes to easily identify which shoes are inside. If possible, use silicone gel packets inside the shoes to absorb excess moisture and prevent the formation of unpleasant odors.

Labeling and categorization
When storing clothes and shoes, label boxes or bags so you know what’s inside. You can use tags like ‘Summer Shirts,’ ‘Swimsuits,’ or ‘Sandals,’ which will greatly help in stacking and later finding things. It will especially help your children and husbands find the items they need, which usually only the mom or wife knows where they are 🙂
Choose the right storage location

It is important to choose a location that is dry, dark, and cool. These conditions help in preserving the color and material of your clothing and shoes. Avoid storing in basements prone to flooding and often very damp, or in attics that can become very hot unless, of course, you have good insulation. The best place for storage would be space in the closet or inside the apartment so that stored clothing and shoes do not come into contact with weather conditions. We do not recommend storing clothes and shoes on balconies and terraces because rain and wind can cause problems and ruin the clothes, and you also risk having various bugs getting into your bags. If you don’t have space, definitely try using vacuum bags and store the clothes in drawers under the bed or couch, for example.
Managing space and storage can be challenging, and sometimes you feel like you never have room for anything, but with a little planning and smart tips, you can efficiently store your summer clothes and shoes. This way, not only will you preserve their quality for the next season, but you’ll also free up space for fall and winter items that are slowly lurking out of the closet 😉
